Light of Togo

Update - April ‘07

I am reminded of the famous words of Winston Churchill when he said, “This is not the end. This is not even the beginning of the end. This is just the end of the beginning.” We began deputation in January of 2005, but 27 months and 100,000 miles later we can finally say that we have reached the end of the beginning! Deputation is not the end goal, it is simply one of the first steps in our journey to Togo. We have greatly enjoyed deputation, with all the great churches God has brought us to and all the wonderful people we’ve met; but needless to say, we are glad to be done! We are so grateful for all of you who have committed to join with us in prayer and through financial giving, and we know that God has used each of you in a special way to help us reach this point.

Our next step is approaching very quickly, and that is to begin language school in Quebec, Canada. We will be leaving on April 30th from Oregon and arriving in Quebec on May 3rd. Classes start on May 7th, so when we arrive we will only have one weekend to prepare for school. Please pray for us during this weekend as we will be looking at apartments and trying to secure a place to live. We are very blessed to have help from some fellow African missionaries who finishing language school soon. They are allowing us to live with them while we go apartment hunting. Please also pray for us during the week following the 7th as we will need to go shopping each day after school to find beds, a couch, and other appliances and furniture.

God has provided for us in so many ways, but I want to share one particular blessing that “came out of nowhere.” We were originally planning to take with us to Quebec only the bare necessities that would fit in our van and in one large box which we would ship to Quebec for $100. Then, once we arrived in Quebec, we would have to purchase everything that we would need to set up our apartment. Just about a week ago, however, my dad, who recently purchased a FedEx route in Portland, found out that he can ship 150 pound boxes for himself and family to anywhere in the United States for three dollars per box! So, for the past few days we have been busy packing all of our household items into 10 large boxes that will be shipped to northern Vermont. Once we arrive in Quebec, we just have to drive across the border, pick them up, and start unpacking! What a blessing this is; now we only need to purchase the “big stuff” once we find an apartment.

It was very difficult recently as we said goodbye to our family, friends, and church in Portland, but we are so excited about the great things God has in store for us in the next year. Please continue to pray that God will help us as we learn French.
